I’d like to get something started, each month try to recall memories and happenings from the past, which occurred in that month. If that spawns more memories from other times, it’s alright, of course. It’d be great if we could start recording things our family did, holidays, trips, school, etc. What was it like when new babies were born, us younger have no idea what it was like before we were born or old enough to recall life. Also it can help all of use remember things that may have been forgotten.

Marysue, thank you for a thoughtful topic. Right now it is difficult for me to think a lot about the past. Just thinking about the past I see the negative as that was the normal for our family with our Dad. But we children got along well.
There is a favorite thing we would do on rainy days-we would make tents in the living room with sheets and chairs. There was no TV in our house but we didn’t need one.
I’ll try to think of some more things we did for fun.

When we lived in Wilson B. I remember when the firemen would flood the playground at Liberty Elementary in the winter for ice skating. I hated the cold weather but loved to ice skate. Playing king of the mountain on the grocery store snow banks and trying to dig out caves in them. I really did not like the cold but it was better than being in the house. In Williamsport, sledding down the sugar bowl. I remember sledding somewhere in Easton but can’t remember where…….

Debbie I remember playing tents in the living room too. That was a lot of fun. I remember going down the street to either yours or Becky’s friends house to see the Partridge Family and listen to their albums and I used to watch the Brady Bunch in color at the Bucemi’s house across the street. We did have an old tv at some time as we had a lead wire hooked to it and wrapped around the curtain rod for reception, sometimes I would hold onto the wires for better reception. It was an awful picture but through all the fuzz, you could make out something. I

Each of us have different memories since our ages differ.
We didn’t get a TV until around 1969 when I was in 6th grade. I remember that the Partridge Family show was a new show being advertized around the time we got our TV. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it began in September 1970 and ended August 1974. -
Debbie, I remember being told that we got a TV because of my birth, that our Mom was so fragile and I don’t know exactly the deal, but it was when I was a few months old, for her the TV was gotten. I can’t verify it with Mom, of course, but that’s the knowledge I grew up with (connected with why my name is so horrid, because Daddy thought Mom was dying after I was born after doctor told him “This was the last straw” so he wanted to name me “Carolyn” but she didn’t want to, hating her name, so they gave ME another awful name!) so it seems she had a really hard time with the pregnancy which was me, hence no photos at the time hardly too.
I remember from when I was 2 and I remember always having had a TV at home. FWIW.

MarySue,
I think that Daddy got the TV when none of us were home. The TV was not new so someone may have given it to us because of the trouble our family was in possibly after Joel was injured.
Here is the story of your name as Mom told it to me. Before she was pregnant with you a doctor told Daddy if she had another baby it could be like the straw that broke the camel’s back. What he probably meant was a complete mental breakdown but Daddy thought it meant she would die. He never made those thoughts known to Mom. When Daddy first saw Mom after you were born He asked Mom they should name her Carolyn after her, and he was very nervous. When Mom told him she wasn’t going to die then Daddy wanted the name Mary. Mom would never want a Catholic sounding name so they compromised with the name MarySue which was Daddy’s idea for a suitable name. Your name isn’t horrible. A few years ago there was someone in the Virginia State government with the first name Marysue.
I remember the day they brought you home. You were wrinkly and had blond hair and a pink ribbon holding your hair on top of your head. We didn’t see you much as Mom ended up going to stay with Aunt Barbara and she always took you with her. Daddy ended up sending the rest of us to stay with Uncle Paul and he lived alone. I remember for Christmas there was a huge snow storm so Daddy came to Uncle Paul’s the day before. The snow was so deep that it went past my knees.
When Mom came back, we children didn’t move back right away, but eventually we did. I don’t remember how long this was or if we split up more than once.
Becky do you remember anything from this time? -
I didn’t say everything about my name situation & the story, but I summed it up from my perspective, while knowing the full story and the ensuing story of what happened later as well (that you wrote above.)
My name IS horrible. It’s been ripped my whole life from “Marysue” or “MarySue” to “MARY” by so many and also “MARY-anything else” instead of MY name. Also, “Mary Sue” or “Marysue” was taken to be used as a litmus test in stories … another whole story that just makes me hate my name … also I do not like “double names” much in the first place, and have been teased to death about it like I was a country bumpkin by kids … and it just is plain that I NEVER liked my name from my earliest memories, I hated it.
As for Catholic names, that’s insane as everyone in our family (us 5 kids) our names of from the Bible, just my first part of name is super popular as Jesus’ mother’s name … Catholic or just Christians of any sect. Y’all’s names are fairly popular, or were, but so much more “uniquely nice” than mine, please grant me that much, please!?!!
There are other MarySue people out there, just not alot. There are many more Mary, Maria, Marie, anything … I could have taken a Spanish version or French version of my first part of name much easier. I just hate how PLAINLY PLAIN “Mary” is and “Sue” is better, but still “PLAIN” and put them together, and that’s Plainly Horrible for me.
Historically many named “Mary” were called “Polly” or “Molly” and some “Maisy” so … I took that last one as my own preferred name (to be called) in the last several years.

I think you can blame Daddy for the name. Mom wanted Bible names. Daddy didn’t like his given name either and went by his middle name.
-
Do you want us all to call you Maisy?
-
Yes. It’s like the real me. “Marysue” is like finding out you aren’t really royalty when you thought you were, if that makes any sense, it’s raw, harsh reality, not a home thing. There is no comfort in it, in other words.
Maisy is who I am.

A name is given to us by our parents……but unlike DNA……we can change it! Maisy it is:)
In one of mom’s writings, Our Own Family Circus, (Christmas 95), she writes about when you were born. She says when in the hospital the nurse would bring you into the room for your feedings. You had a pink bow taped to your blonde hair and the nurse would sing,”here she comes…..Miss America”. I was caught trying to lift you out of the crib when you were newborn. I remember it well. I didn’t like being scolded for it!
Another of her writings called Christmas Memoirs, does not have a date on it but her memories of Christmas 1966 were…..one month before Christmas she was hospitalized. She had much sorrow thinking of that time as (Maisy) was a lovely baby and very sweet. Our Grandparents had taken (Maisy) to Aunt Barbara’s for a couple weeks while mom was in the hospital, then Mom went to Aunt Barbara’s. The rest of us were at Uncle Pauls.
Mom was happy to have her baby back with her but that was all she could handle at the time. She had been separated from (Maisy) for one month at that time. The rest of us were supposed to go at Christmas but we got snowed in and had to wait a week. We finally had Christmas on New Years at Aunt Barbara’s. Daddy took Debbie and Becky back home with him as they had school and he had to work. The following weekend, he came back and brought all of us home. I remember some things that happened at a really young age but I can’t recall any specific memory relating to that particular time.
